Small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the UK economy. As of December, there were 5.7 million businesses registered in the UK, of which more than 99% are SMEs, accounting for 60% of employment and 51% of turnover.

The North, in particular Manchester, is a hotbed for SMEs, with the city ranking first nationally for SME growth with a 36% rise since 2010. Manchester is also fast emerging as a tech hub for the UK, and the Northern Powerhouse Partnership have called for investment to support further growth, particularly around digital. Announcing the publication of the recent Powerhouse 2050 report, EY’s Stephen Gould said:

“Enhanced connectivity, such as fibre to the premises broadband or 5G roll-out, and better support for start-ups would be major advances in how we embrace the digital age, but equally important is creating incubators and co-working spaces to suit the needs of a modern workforce.”

One of the top five UK universities for SME engagement, the University of Salford is recognised for its sector-leading work in supporting small and medium-sized businesses and offering students innovative industry experiences. Its focus on creative entrepreneurship allows opportunities to be fully capitalised through new digital, creative and social media. In today’s rapidly changing and disruptive technological world, it is vital that SMEs embrace such digital transformation to succeed. Put simply, the alternative is failure.

In direct response to the digital challenges faced by SMEs, Salford Professional Development and Salford Business School have put together an educational, inspirational knowledge-sharing and networking event to help small, medium and essential businesses to embrace these opportunities.

Returning for its 5th year, The Creative Entrepreneur presents Digital 4.0 for the Northern Powerhouse. The University of Salford leads the way in industry partnerships and collaboration. Held at the state-of-the-art MediaCity, at the heart of the UK’s business start-up capital, this year’s event promises to be the biggest yet. The University of Salford are delighted to work with SME’s – both digitally native businesses and companies in more traditional sectors who want to harness the enormous power of digital.

Digital 4.0 for the Northern Powerhouse is the only event in Greater Manchester dedicated to overcoming the challenges surrounding your digital transformation, regardless of your industry or role across industries. So what does a successful digital business look like? It looks fast! Uber and Google are often revered for their use of digital data streams and their ability to analyse and distribute data immediately. Similar companies are also embracing this technology.
